Top Things to Do in San Antonio

Hi everyone! It’s Gerald and Kacey here. We’ve had the time to go around and look for things to do in San Antonio this weekend. So we came up with a list of sights and tours that we think you will enjoy when you visit San Antonio.

Top 8 Things to Do in San Antonio

San Antonio Riverwalk Cruise

Experience one of the most famous sights in San Antonio with the San Antonio Riverwalk Cruise. You can learn everything you need to know about San Antonio River in this 35-minute comprehensive riverboat tour and covers 1.5 miles of the River Walk. What we loved about this quick tour is the very informative and entertaining captain that gave us lots of historical facts. The river is a great start to get introduced to the city because of its very serene and welcoming atmosphere.

The Alamo

Another popular sight in San Antonio is The Alamo that says a lot about the early history of Texas. You can walk and take a tour of its grounds and learn to appreciate San Antonio. This is a prime spot in our area and you shouldn’t miss this place when visiting the town.

San Antonio Mission Tours

The Mission Tour visits four historic sites in San Antonio. It gives visitors an idea of how life was like during the 18th century. These sites have earned UNESCO World Heritage status because they are great a great example of history. The mission we enjoyed the most was San Jose because it has the National Park visitor center and a movie theater that shows the history of the missions.

Botanical Garden

The botanical garden is another beautiful place to go to if you want to relax. It is near downtown so it’s easily accessible. It’s a 33-acre property that houses different plants from all over the world. The garden and plants are really lovely and you know they take care of them very well. There are even different landscape styles like the Japanese Tea Garden, the Conservatory, and the different Texas landscape areas. We would really like to come back here and explore it more.

Sea World

Sea World is a great place to visit for a fun family day. There are a lot of attractions to see here. Just make sure you are aware of the schedules so that you can catch them all. There are also park rides to enjoy. You’ll need a whole day to experience everything in Sea World. It is a bit pricey, but it’s definitely worth the money!

Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch

Although it seems pricey to go to, the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is worth it to spend a whole day in, especially if you have children. The animals are treated very well and the 450-acre ranch premises are kept neat and tidy. You can feed the animals with the food that they give you. This is one of the things to do in San Antonio with kids.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Experience a day of extreme fun in one of the most interesting Six Flags locations! Many people say that this is the best one and we definitely agree. The rides and attractions will fill up a whole day’s schedule and will keep you busy until the night. There are also relaxing water rides for those who do not like extreme ones. It’s best to start the day early to be able to ride all the attractions you want. Also, check the park schedule before you go so you can plan your day ahead and join the events.

San Antonio Walking Food Tour

What’s the best thing to do after a full-packed day? EAT! San Antonio is gaining fame among the foodies and this tour is perfect to experience traditional Tex-Mex food or those that are found at this location only. Another great way to get familiar with a place is to know its food. This tour is around 3 hours with 5 restaurant stops, and will definitely take you to the roots of San Antonio.

Other Top Things to Do in San Antonio

San Antonio Market Square

The San Antonio Market Square is a city attraction that you have to visit. It has a great Mexican that will take you to Mexico. There are a lot of things to see in the market square which are mostly stalls, souvenir shops, and restaurants. Enjoy over 3 blocks of apparels, handicrafts, and food.

San Antonio Museum of Art

Going to the San Antonio Museum of Art is one of the things to do in San Antonio for free. There are certain days when they offer free admission so watch out for those! This museum displays many different styles of art and different eras as well. So if you are an art lover, you can spend hours in this museum. Both the modern and ancient collections are beautiful and will surely keep you coming back. Free admission on Tuesday from 4pm until 9pm, and also on Sundays from 10am until 12 noon.

Briscoe Western Museum

Another museum that offers free admission is the Briscoe Western Museum that is located near the Riverwalk. It is made up of 3 floors with wonderful displays of western history and it is best to start from the top floor going down to the bottom. Their exhibits have audio and video too for better viewing experience. It is free to go on Tuesdays from 4 in the afternoon until 9 in the evening.

La Villita Historic Arts Village

La Villita or Little Village is the first village in San Antonio. For us, this is an interesting place because it is the start of real estate in the area. It is popular for the locally made artisan and specialty boutiques of arts and crafts in the old houses there. Going here is easy because it is located along the Riverwalk too.

If you want to experience country music, you can head over to Power Plant in Seguin, which is just a few minutes drive from San Antonio. You can watch Buddy Boy Vargas who is a very talented musician.

Experience Country Music in San Antonio with Buddy Vargas

Hi Everyone! It’s Gerald here. Kacey and I had a property showing recently and after that, we proceeded to the Power Plant in Seguin, Texas just right outside San Antonio. We were pleasantly surprised by live music from the budding artist ‘Buddy Boy Vargas.’

He is a well-known country singer from Gruene, TX that has opened for many very famous musicians like Johnny Lee, Ronnie Milsap, Blackhawk, Little Texas, Restless Heart, Pam Tillis, Kevin Fowler and even Mark Wills.  He has also had the opportunity to share the stage with the likes of Randy Rogers and Brady Black of the Randy Rogers Band.   He has a very promising career ahead of him.  He was fantastic and we definitely enjoyed his music. It was such a great way to end our day.

He is able to weave rock and roll songs and ‘hair metal’ songs into country songs seamlessly while maintaining the integrity and spirit of the original song.  A great skill that not every musician can do. It was pretty incredible and he is an immensely talented musician which turned us into instant fans.

He has been performing as a solo act since 2010 and most recently performing as a 1-man 3-piece band playing the guitar, bass, and drums while singing simultaneously all LIVE with NO looping or NO backing tracks. This is what even impressed us more.

He gets a lot of work with well over 200 shows per year because of his George Strait covers, but he does have music out on the radio, Internet radio, and on digital download sites such as iTunes, Spotify, Amazon music, etc.

Everything You Need To Know About San Antonio River Walk

Hello, everyone! We want to introduce another amazing place to visit in our beloved San Antonio. The San Antonio River Walk is called the American version of the Venice Grand Canal. It is also called Paseo del Rio or simply River Walk. The River Walk is a network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River lined by bars, shops, restaurants, nature and public art. Situated one story beneath the streets of San Antonio, the River Walk is a big tourist attraction and a must-see when visiting Texas.

riverwalk map

According to its website, it all began in 1536 when Alex Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca visited Texas and describes the River to his people. Then in 1792, when San when the missions in San Antonio were closed down, the growing population of San Antonio made steps to control the flooding in the area. This made commercial development along the river possible. On June 28, 1929, Robert H. Hugman presents his plan for “The Shops of Romula and Aragon” to the city but the Depression prevents further expenditures.

It was in 1936 that Texas Centennial Jack White, manager of the White Plaza Hotel, that teamed up with the Mexican Businessmen’s Association to stage the first river parade called “A Venetian Night”. Then in 1941, the first river carnival and night parade were held. But it wasn’t until 1961 that the rehabilitation of the River Walk level was truly put into action.

The first Paseo del Rio Association Great County River Festival was held in 1969. From then on almost yearly a new establishment opens along the river up to 2011. Now you can see the River Walk wind and loop under bridges as two parallel sidewalks lined with restaurants and shops. The major tourist attractions are the Shops at Rivercenter, the Arneson River Theatre, Marriage Island, La Villita, HemisFair Park, the Tower Life Building, the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Pearl and the city’s five Spanish colonial missions. These San Antonio Missions have been declared a World Heritage Site in 2015.

Fiesta: A San Antonio Tradition

When one hears the word “fiesta” one immediately thinks about an extravagant celebration or a big party with dancing and singing and parades. Merriam-Webster defines “fiesta” as a saint’s day celebrated in Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines with processions and dances. Did you know that there is also Fiesta in San Antonio?

According to Fiesta-SA, Fiesta San Antonio started in 1891 as a one-parade event as a way to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto.  Today it is one of the nation’s premier festivals and is considered the Party with a Purpose. Fiesta celebrates the diverse and rich culture of San Antonio while being a fund raising event as well. The Fiesta San Antonio Commission has been in charge of the city-wide celebration since 1959 and there are over 75,000 volunteers annually. Statistics show that around 3 and a half million people go to Fiesta San Antonio yearly!

Different from Mardi Gras

Fiesta seems like Mardi Gras but they have distinct differences. Mardi Gras is the huge parade and feast that celebrates the coming Lenten meat fast, with origins in Rome and Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries. From here, the traditional revelry of “Boeuf Gras,” or fatted calf, followed France to her colonies according to Mardi Gras New Orleans. It goes on to relay that the Mardi Gras Carnival began in 1781 and by the late 1830s, New Orleans held street processions of maskers with carriages and horseback riders to celebrate Mardi Gras.

My San Antonio reports that Mardi Gras differs not only in size but also in its moral theology. “Fiesta is one grand family picnic. Mardi Gras an orgy. Fiesta is beer. Mardi Gras is gin … or vodka … or rum … or all the above. At Fiesta, men call out to young women on floats to “show us your shoes!” At Mardi Gras, men exhort women to “show us your … Let’s just say they set their sights somewhat higher. At Fiesta, the young women oblige. So do many of the young women at Mardi Gras.”

What sets Fiesta apart?

The annual Fiesta employs a Mexican theme and celebrates the anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto where Texas won their independence. What makes Fiesta different is the city itself. San Antonio used to be like New Orleans, with guns and plenty of whiskey and riotous behavior. After WWII, San Antonio underwent a cultural transformation and began to focus on building and establishing families. Fiesta itself is a civic celebration unlike the religious Mardi Gras, and the people of San Antonio look forward to the celebration yearly.

Spurs Win Game 1

It’s game time once again at the AT&T Center in San Antonio Texas! We are huge fans of the San Antonio Spurs. They are widely acknowledged within the NBA as being one of the best teams and are winners of multiple championships. When the San Antonio Spurs host the Memphis Grizzlies in the first playoff game of the first round in the Western Conference, it will be the fifth time these two teams have met this season according to KSAT. We had some clients, that gifted us these awesome tickets because they were not going to be able to make it (THANK YOU, Melissa and Connor!). There were 18,418 attendees and the Center was almost filled. It was a wonderful Saturday to see the Spurs beat the Grizzlies after being down in the first quarter only to come back and lead every quarter after.  Check out our photos of before, during and after the game below!

ESPN reports that Kawhi Leonard matched his postseason high with 32 points. The Memphis Grizzlies now face a 1-0 deficit in the Western Conference First Round after being defeated by the Spurs with a final score of 111-82 relays, adding how Marc Gasol scored a career postseason high 32 points. We enjoyed the game immensely and had an after party at Rock & Brews, the rock-inspired entertainment and dining complex right there at the AT&T Center.  We put together a little video:

Power Plant Texas Grill

We found out about a wonderful restaurant in Seguin, Texas called the Power Plant Texas Grill. The Power Plant was built in approximately 1893 by Henry Troell. The Power Plant Texas Grill is a fantastic burger joint that celebrates its original founder. They serve American cuisine and they serve lunch and dinner with local brew or regular domestic drinks. Walk-ins are welcome, but they also accommodate big groups or parties. The place is child-friendly and also has outdoor seating. They rated 3.5 stars on Trip Advisor so we knew we had to check them out.

The hamburgers we ordered were amazing.  They made homemade potato chips and those were served with our hamburgers.  I had the Tesla Burger with Avocado and Gerald had the AC/DC burger.  The homemade chips were absolutely delicious and tasted fresh.
